I have been doing some research into how the Internet works and have found that numbers are the cause of most of the routing problems including loopback, lost packets, and worm holes in the bottom of lakes which suck up radio waves from the MSN Direct network (just kidding).
Nonetheless, the powers who created the Internet design (DARPA) thought to give huge chucks of the address space on the internet to companies that were famous in the 70’s. One of them is Ford, the company that brought you the Taurus, and the other is the Postal Service which has USPS Priority mail (still slower than the internet).
A complete list of who has the biggest slices of the Internet pie can be found on Wikipedia -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_assigned_/8_IP_address_blocks
(Note that this list does not include any assignments of /8 blocks by the regional registries such as RIPE NCC, ARIN, APNIC, AfriNIC, LACNIC, JPNIC etc, which includes most of the later cable modem blocks including 64/8 et al.)
One day over, another thing learned. Hope this lesson finds you in a pleasant state of mind.
