Jon added a pop-up on each pushpin that gives more information about the visitor at that Pushpin. The information includes City, State, Time, and exact Latitude / Longitude.

 I think Jon did not include IP address so as not to give away any “personal” information about the visitors.

Jon - our programmer extraordinaire - has changed the code so that it is using Microsoft’s built-in Virtual Earth IP / Wifi Lookup to determine the latitude longitude and it will now fall back and use http://api.hostip.info only when it does not find the lat/lon from Virtual Earth.

What is this? When MapVisitors does not detect a referrer, it will default to showing visitors to MapVisitors, and not some other web site. This will happen when a visit is made directly to mapvisitors instead of clicking from another web site. It may also happen because of certain firewall settings.

MapVisitors is a tool to graphically show on a detailed world map where your web site visitors are coming from. We are using Microsoft’s Virtual Earth service which is the same thing Microsoft uses to power http://local.live.com

MapVisitors was originally set up and hosted by MP2K Magazine (see announcement) but the server hosting the application was being overwhelmed by too many things and we took it down.

Yesterday we finished transferring and fixing the code to run on a new server under it’s own domain www.mapvisitors.com. While we are still working on the details such as the UI, it is fully functional so go ahead and paste the code into your web site and give it a whirl.
